A study in Hungary found that some dogs can learn new words as fast as a two-year-old. The scientists analyzed how quickly dogs can learn new words and found that some can learn them after hearing them only four times.
One of the authors of the study, which was published in the journal Scientific Reports, Dr. “Dogs learn words at a rate similar to that of children aged two to three years, but we do not know if the mechanism in the brain of the two it’s the same, “said Claudia Fugazza.
THE NAME OF THE NEW OBJECT HAS BEEN SPOKEN ONLY 4 TIMES
However, Fugazza explained that two different experiments were performed on both dogs. In the first one, the dogs were presented with a new object in addition to the seven toys they knew, and their owners instructed them to bring one of the items by name. In the other task, the dogs played with the new toys and their owner repeated the name of the toy. The experiments were then repeated with different new objects for the two dogs, with each new object named only four times.
The researchers found that Whiskey and Vicky Nina chose different familiar items, even though the name of the toy was new to them. However, when asked to select one of the two new toys by name, no animal did better than coincidence.
They managed to choose what was different from the items they knew.
In other words, Fugazza said that the dogs chose the correct toy on the first mission from among the items whose names they already know. Vhisky chose the correct toy in 17 of 24 attempts and Vicky Nina chose the correct toy in 15 of 20 attempts.
Fugazza, on the other hand, said that the ability to learn words is not unique to all dogs. The 20 dogs, who were related to Whiskey and Vicky Nina, none showed the ability to learn words when the team tested them.
Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at London College University who reviewed the study, said: “The findings cast doubt on the assumption that the ability to learn the sounds of words associated with certain objects is peculiar to humans. However, the memory of the name is not specific to dogs of certain breeds, other factors such as the social environment and how long it takes to remember should be investigated ”.
